I'm building a little wave-following buoythe Lagrangian Wave Interrogator — a boogie board with a vertical PVC ring on it, carrying two cameras and an IMU, meant to ride in the surf zone and record what a wave feels like from the inside rather than watch it from a pier. It reached the dry-fit stage last week, and the ring — the part that's supposed to be a rigid roll-cage — flops back and forth like a metronome. I knew it hand to be handled sooner or later, and I had a moment today.
A transverse PVC hoop stands about 23 cm off the deck, clamped to the board's rails on each side, electronics up at the crown. Nothing glued yet — I was checking fit. Good thing.
Nudge the crown toward the nose and it tips. Nudge it toward the tail and it tips back. Side to side it's rock solid. So it's specifically a fore-and-aft flop, and that specificity is the whole clue.
The ring is a flat hoop pinned to the board along a single line — the two rail attachments sit on one axis running across the board. Pin a flat thing along one line and you have built a hingein the jargon: two supports on a shared axis leave one rotational degree of freedom uncontrolled. In English: it can still spin about that line. My hinge line runs port-to-starboard, so the free spin is nose-to-tail. And all the mass is up at the crown, a hand's-width above the pivot — an inverted pendulum, politely waiting to fall over in whichever direction I poke it.
It wasn't a bad bend or a loose fitting. My pipe-bending is semiskilledit's right there in the name of the blog, but this wasn't that. The hoop was built correctly and still floppy, because the flop was designed in.
My first instinct was a stay — a cord from the crown back to the tail, like guy-lining a tent pole. It half-works, which is the trap. A cord only pulls; it can't push. So a single tail-stay stops the ring tipping toward the nose and does exactly nothing about it tipping toward the taila boat's mast needs a forestay and a backstay for precisely this reason — one line per direction you want held. And the obvious cord to grab, the coiled boogie-board leash, is a spring — so even as a backstay it would let the ring bob and boing instead of holding it. Tension-only members are one-directional; springy ones aren't members at all.
Triangulate. Two rigid struts from the crown down to two feet on the deck — one forward, one aft — turn the hinge into an A-frame. A strut both pushes and pulls, so the pair holds the crown from both sides with no tension to keep tuned and nothing to go slack when a wave tumbles it. And the bonus you only get when you stop fighting the design: those two struts are exactly where the fore and aft cameras wanted to mount anyway. The brace and the camera booms are the same sticks.
Half of building things badly-but-well is learning to tell "I did this wrong" apart from "this was always going to do that." A floppy hoop that's built perfectly is a geometry lesson, not a failure. The pipe bends can stay a little ugly.
While I had my head in the stars for other reasons, I decided to try a recurring thing here: every week or soweekly if I keep the discipline — no promises I'll take one real, recent result from the science press and give it the name it should have had. The phrase that makes a thing sayable at a bus stop before the maths is settled — the way "black hole" and "Big Bang"Fred Hoyle coined it as a sneer, arguing against the theory; the jibe outlived his own model did the heavy lifting long before the equations agreed. Call it the true-name desk.
Issue one is already loaded: an extremely-stripped supernova, SN 2021yfj — a star that began around sixty times the Sun's mass and was flayed all the way down to its silicon and sulfur before it detonated, exposing a layer we had never once seen laid bare, by a mass-loss mechanism nobody can currently namethe Nature write-up more or less shrugs: the observations are "so extreme that it's challenging to find a model that can describe" them. The literature will land on something forgettable.
